This course will allow students to examine the many facets that contribute to shaping the course of modern European nations, including political, military, religious and geographical reform. Students will examine the revolutions that changed the nature of government in France, Italy, Germany and Russia, as well as the impact that these revolutions had upon other European nations at the time. Students will become acquainted with the writings of social critics such as John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire and Charles Dickens. This course will study the impact of two World Wars and the reasons for the implementation of the European Union during the late 20th century and status of European nations on a global scale in the 21st century.
