Flood & Water Decontamination

The SMS Flood and Water Damage Restoration Process

1. Inspection:
SMS certified technicians will conduct a thorough inspection to determine the extent of the damage and type of restoration needed. The flooded area will need to be completely dry before any work can be undertaken. Once dry, samples can be taken for molds and other microbial organisms. All damaged materials, such as carpets, flooring, wall board, timbers, and insulation will be noted for removal. A detailed plan for replacing these materials will be developed, and an estimate provided.

2. Clean-up:
SMS certified technicians will carefully remove all the ruined and damaged materials from the area. If mold is involved, the appropriate equipment will be used to ensure any contaminated surfaces do not spread the contamination. Sealing off the area and using an air purifying vacuum system to remove spores in the air is common practice. Our technicians wear HAZMAT safety gear, and carefully remove all contaminated and damaged materials. Building surfaces not being removed (such as cement foundations) will be thoroughly cleaned with the appropriate cleaning agents to ensure no microbial organisms remain. SMS certified technicians know that it is important to work quickly when dealing with water damaged structures. The safety of everyone in the area is always a priority for our technicians.

3. Restoration:
SMS certified technicians are skilled at all types of construction and will completely rebuild the damaged area once it is safe to do so. They will also apply the appropriate antimicrobial agent to any surfaces where prevention of microbial contamination is necessary.

SMS Indoor Environmental Cleaning specializes in the INSPECTION, EMERGENCY DRY-OUT, REMOVAL, DECONTAMINATION, and COMPLETE RESTORATION of flooded and water damaged areas in both Commercial and Residential Indoor Structures.

Severely Water Damaged Basement Timbers

Flood and Water Damage are all to common in the New England area, as anyone who lives near a river will tell you. Melting snow, pouring rain, and rising river beds can cause basements to flood, roofs to leak, and exterior walls to crumble. Mother nature isn't the only cause of these problems. Broken, Frozen, and leaky pipes also cause their fair share of damage.

It is important to act quickly once water damage is discovered. If the source of the flooding is from household plumbing, then turn the water off at the source to prevent further damage. Remove all the water as quickly as possible. If it is a lot of water, call for Emergency Dry-Out Services, once the water is off and the flooding has stopped. The longer the water is allowed to stand, the more severe the damage will be. The area MUST be allowed to dry out completely before attempting any cleaning or restoration work. This is because mold and other microbes are active in wet material. Mold contamination can easily go undetected while it grows and spreads. When it finally becomes visible, the area will need a lot more than just restoration work!

When dealing with flood and water damage restoration, most damaged materials need to be removed and replaced. Insulation, wall board, fabrics, and flooring can be easily ruined by water. Timbers, joists, and wood boards all need to be checked for structural safety. Everything should be stripped back to reveal damage inside and in between walls, under insulation, and where any paneling has been used. Building materials that are not ruined will need to be cleaned to ensure all mold spores and other microbial organisms have been removed. A fungicide may be necessary to prevent any future mold problems. Once this has all been completed, then rebuilding the area can begin.

There are many industry regulations and strict guidelines that must be followed when this type of work is undertaken. SMS Indoor Environmental Cleaning is an EPA Certified Lead-Safe Firm (a mandatory certification for all companies who offer restoration service). Our technicians know how what needs to go, what can stay, how best to decontaminate the area, and the safest, quickest ways to restore any property. If you have flood or water damage, make sure you have the area properly inspected for structural damage, microbial contamination, and to ensure that everything has completely dried out.
